This Class is Open to Active Duty First Responders or Retired First Responders ONLY!
During this two day class, Hosted by North Carolina Peer Support, students learn the components of peer support. Key concepts of the class include active listening and action planning for those in crisis. Students will learn how to serve as a bridge between members who are suffering and the many mental health resources available.
North Carolina Peer Support seeks to contribute and provide ongoing emotional wellness resources that are readily needed in Public Safety. This class will give you a better sense of what NCPS is all about, and will better equip you to recognize when a fellow member is in need of a listening ear.
This peer support training introduces the practice and techniques of psychological first aid, as provided to first responders by first responders. It includes a first round of psychological education on responding to first responders behavioral health needs. The training supports the National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation’s Everyone Goes Home project, as well as the 13th Life Safety Initiative: Emergency Responders and their families must have access to counseling and psychological support services. The training requires 16 hours and is delivered over two eight-hour days.
Class Cap is 30 students and by attending this class, you are agreeing that you are fit to serve others, and you agree to take care of your own mental health by seeking care for any problems you may currently be suffering from. We strongly believe that we can only help others, if we care for ourselves. Our members are guided by the following principle:
“Until we can receive with an open heart, we’re never really giving with an open heart. When we attach judgment to receiving help, we knowingly or unknowingly attach judgment to giving help.” –Brene Brown
